There are way too many variables for a simple answer, like; did they buy if for racing? for cruising? family interest change? economy?

Great Question! Here are the 3 possible correct answers to your question:
1. If you are using that term loosely and you really mean “boat” when you say “yacht” – then the average “new to boating” boat owner buys new and keeps his boat an verage of 4 years before trading or selling.
Whereas, the average “experienced” boat owner is much smarter – he buys a used boat (but bigger), and keeps his vessel almost twice as long (an average of 7.5 years).
2. If you actually mean “yacht” as in Paul Allen’s Octopus – when you say “yacht” then the answer is that the boat will most likely never be on the market again – but passed on in his family from to generation.
3. If however you mean “yacht” as when someone buys any size boat that they can really not afford – the answer is until the finance company, IRS, or ex-wife come out and repo it.
Happy and Safe Boating,
and I sure hope none of us are ever in that last catagory.

I would say on average a person witha yacht probably keeps it for about 10-15 years.mabey a little more or less, unless they are REALLY RICH them probably about only 5-10 years.
That captain John has a problem when people refer their boat as being a yacht so Idk what he is saying (but between u and me its getting a little annoying)…..he should just answer the question….

Lauren, most people that put a prefix before their names, like Captain, is someone so insecure that he thinks he might be a captain, bet he only has a six pack !! I have crossed all oceans, but not all seas, I call myself Marc, and am dutifully self employed and have been since I was 18, I have an RYA ocean master license and insure by Lloyd’s of London, have been since my certification from the RYA. I have had a few crew that held an American captains license that did not know what a sextant was, nor a directional finder, or steer a compass course, so will never employ a US captain to even wash the bildge, it is all classroom and no knowledge of the sea, most of them have never seen the oceanm hell I sunk and spent 10 days in a life raft because the coasties did not have a clue how fast a sail boat can do bare poles in 160 knots of breeze, so they looked in the wrong area, that was before the 406 era.so 2 days on USS America and Nine Days in ICU in new york, but am still here and still doing it som etimes for fun, not a living, but I do not ask anyone to call me captain as they know where I have been, nearly 10 times around the world, and never forget your sextant and compass.
